BACKWARD LINKAGES IN READYMADE GARMENT INDUSTRY OF BANGLADESH: APPRAISAL AND POLICY IMPLICATIONS

Abstract


Emergence of global trade and Multi fiber Arrangement (MFA) phase-out lead the textile and clothing industry to be more competitive in the free trade apparel market. Phase out of MFA was expected to have a negative impact on the ready-made garment (RMG) industry in Bangladesh, but Bangladeshi RMG sector was able to overcome the difficult time successfully and in fact its shows continuous growth that is briefly discussed on the first stage of this paper. This paper then elaborately reflects prospects and problems of the RMG industry of Bangladesh with a view to present a comprehensive picture of this industry. Finally, this paper will focus on policy implication to reduce cost of raw material, process of shortage lead time, build up strong backward linkage facility, establish research and training institute, and reduce infrastructure barriers in order to maintain the competitiveness in the global RMG market.
