A Critical Review of Aroma Therapeutic Applications for Textiles

Andre Julian West, Katherine Emma Carroll

Abstract

The aim of this study was to review and assess the development of aroma therapeutic applications in textile products. Recent studies have shown that aroma-enhanced textiles are being developed in the areas of sustainability, environmental consciousness, health and well-being, and enhanced brand awareness. Some essential oils, which can be used to infuse textiles with aromas, are also known to have antimicrobial properties that are useful for medical textile applications. A summary presents some conclusions about the current state of knowledge in this area and provides suggestions for applications and integration in consumer products.
