A Message from the Managing Editor on This Issue of JTATM

This issue of JTATM contains papers written by Ph.D. students in Textile Technology Management at NC State University College of Textiles for their passing a decision modeling course I taught in Spring 2016.  While the regular peer review process was simplified for this edition, I am quite happy with the rigor and quality of the papers shown in this issue.

We have witnessed an ongoing revolution during the last two decades as the new information technology systematically destroyed every existing paradigm we sat on comfortably for a long time. While new technologies have played significant roles in the manufacturing sectors of fiber, textile, apparel and fashion industries, it was the power of management decisions that separated winners from losers in an unprecedented competition with such tools as technology forecasting, demand forecasting, quality management, optimization with automation and marketing under online big data environment. The archaic supply chains had to be destroyed, rebuilt, created and strengthened in the midst of global trade agreements and dynamic information technology development.

In US and elsewhere, innovative and sustainable manufacturing has been a mandate for bolstering employment in many countries. Although new and innovative products seem to be a vehicle leading to the goal, the sobering question has been “what new technology and what new product would guarantee profitable and sustainable manufacturing operation?” The answer is quite unclear.

In answering this question, view of our students may be somewhat naïve or incompatible based on the existing business climates and regulations that are country-specific and product-specific. However, I thought it is a worthwhile exercise to ask our students to produce some new ideas. This JTATM issue is not a collection of highly scientific analyses or workable hypotheses. Instead, I hope this exercise would open a gate for new discussions and empower them to creating new paradigms for the future of textile technology management globally. Our readers will no doubt find flaws in their views, but perfection should take a back seat while we are in search of a new road.

Please applaud the efforts of these textile management students who will be the leaders of the challenging new world soon. Cheers!
